Serving Champfleurie (Bridgend) Oil Works, subsequently Philpstoun Oil Works

No. 3 Mine was sunk to exploit Broxburn Shale lying south west of Champfleurie (Bridgend) Oil Works, and shared mine head facilities with the longer established No. 2 Mine. The mine closed on collapse of the Linlithgow Oil Company Ltd, but was briefly reopened by James Ross & Company who extended their mineral railway from Philpstoun No. 4 Mine to enable Ochiltree shale to be transported to Philpstoun Oil Works.

Shale-field: Champfleurie, Philpstoun and Blackness shale-field.

Mapped by the Ordnance Survey of c.1897 - No. 3 Mine is showing heading west from a staging shared with No. 2 Mine.

It is understood that No.3 shale mine, formerly worked by Linlithgow Oil Coy. (now defunct) is to be re-opened by Messrs James Ross & Company, Philpstoun Oil Works, who some time ago acquired a lease on the minerals which were leased to the Linlithgow Oil Company. The shale from the mine will be conveyed to the retorts at Philpstoun Oil Works, and it is understood that it is with that object in view Messrs.
