A short-lived pit to a small reserve of Raeburn Shale, which was also accessed by a mine labelled as "No. 1".

Shown as "old shaft" on the Ordnance Survey map of c.1893, subsequent editions show an enclosure erected around the shaft.

      A meeting of all those employed at those works was held at No.4 pit on Saturday afternoon, when Mr. Scott, the manager, intimated that the directors were determined to abide by the rules posted in the works, but advised the men to return to work, and he would endeavor to get the rules modified.
