Inclined or level shaft

Serving Addiewell Oil Works

A mine or level to a small reserve of Grey Shale also exploited by Addiewell No. 2 Mine. Presumably the mine follow the shale from its exposure on the southern bank of the Breich Water and may have been an exploratory working, or driven to improve drainage or ventilation.

See "Mines and pits in the Addiewell area" for further background.

No surface traces remained in when mapped by the Ordnance Survey in c.1893, and the location appeared partly buried by the advancing shale bing.
