Redwood notes "Pentland Oil Works, Loanhead nr. Edinburgh, started 1880 and still going".

The Clippens Oil Company emerged from successful coal oil operations in Renfrewshire and secured a lease of shale at Pentland in 1879. The Pentland Oil Works were constructed by the Clippens Oil Company in 1882 and from c.1885 operated in association with the adjacent Straiton Oil Works and refinery, making this one of the larger shale oil concerns. Some of the crude oil produced at Pentland was also transported to Clippens Oil Works for refining. The Clippens Company was reconstructed in 1893.

Oil production was suspended in 1897 as the consequence of a long and complex legal case with the Edinburgh and District Water Trust which was not concluded until 1907. By that time the works had fallen derelict and never returned to production.

The supposed Pentland oil works office building later served as the Straiton Inn (laterly the Callyr Inn) and survives (in 2013) in a derelict condition.
