The estate of Balbardie and Bathgate was purchased for the Incorporation of Daniel Stewart's Hospital, Edinburgh in 1861, controlled by the Edinburgh Merchant Company.

THE ESTATES of BALBARDIE & BATHGATE,
Together with the Mansion-house, Offices, &c. containing about 881 imperial acres, whereof the greater part consists of amble land of superior quality. The property is very compact, and is most advantageously situated, nearly half way hetween Edinburgh and Glasgow, within a short distance of Bathgate, which is both a post and market town. Coal might be wrought extensively on the property, and there is also an inexhaustible field of Limestone, at present partially worked. The superiority of the Town of Bathgate, which is built on the property, confers much weight and influence on the proprietor of these Estates; and so desirable a property in every respect is seldom to be found. MINERALS THE COUNTY OF LINLITHGOW TO BE LET ON LEASE.
THE MINERALS, consisting of GAS COAL. BLACKBAND, IRONSTONE, and HOUSEHOLD COAL, in the Estates of BATHGATE and BALBARDIE, in the County of Linlithgow, belonging to the Incorporation of Daniel Stewart's Hospital, and as presently held on Lease by Mr James Hosie, will be Let on Lease for Nineteen Years from Martinmas 1861, or such term may be agreed on. There are Two Working Pits presently in operation, where the Minerals can examined: and the Minerals will be Let at a fixed Yearly Rent, or Royalties the respective Minerals, the option of the Proprietors.
