Thomas Abbott was the youngest son of William Abbott, a Coal Miner, and Annie Abbott, of 10 Burnside Terrace, Torphichen. He was born in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, and at the time of enlisting in the First World War, Thomas was living in Seafield, Bathgate, and was working at Pumpherston Oil Company as a shale miner.

Private Thomas Abbott was enlisted in January 1915 in the Royal Scots (Rank Private Service Number 300845) and was killed in action in Mesopotamia on 19 April 1917, age 23. He was buried in the Gaza War Cemetery. His surviving siblings were George, John, Isabella and Elizabeth. George and John both lived in Blackburn, Bathgate, and worked as coal miners.

Seafield Royal Scots Killed – This week Mr and Mrs William Abbott, late of Seafield, Bathgate, and presently residing at Wardlaw Place, Edinburgh, have received intimation that their youngest son, Pte Thomas Abbott, Royal Scots, has been killed in action in Mesopotamia. Deceased was a shale miner with Pumpherston Oil Company Ltd, before entering the Army. He joined the colours in January 1915 and was sent in August of last year to Egypt. Mrs William Strathearn and Mrs Alex Downie, two sisters of Pte Abbott, have each lost a husband in the Great War. Two brothers, coal miners, reside in Blackburn, Bathgate.
