A number of shale mines were opened or modernised immediately prior to World War Two. Among the many innovations introduced at that time was the use of underground diesel locomotives two haul rakes of shale hutches to the pit bottom. Underground diesel locomotives are thought to have used at Philpstoun (No.6?) pit, Burngrange No.1 & 2 pits, and Fraser pit.
