James Young & Co. was one of three partnerships formed to operate Bathgate chemical works and associated business interests associated with Young's patent, (the others being E. Meldrum & Co. and E.W. Binney & Co.) The firm is refered to in company papers, but was seldom employed in public communications and trading activities of the partnerships.

The firm of James Young managed the operation of Bathgate chemical works and the constuction of Addiewell works between the dissolution of the Bathgate partnerships at the end of 1864 and the formation of Young's Paraffin Light and Mineral Oil Co. in January 1866. It also seems likely that the production of oil from Riddings in Derbyshire during 1848 was undertaken under the title of James Young & Co.

      THE Copartnership hitherto subsisting between the Subscribers, the sole Partners, in the business of Paraffine Oil and Paraffine Manufacturers, &c., at Bathgate, Glasgow, and elsewhere, under the Firms of E. W. BINNEY & CO., and E. MELDRUM & CO., respectively, Expires this day, and is now DISSOLVED. The business will in future be carried on by Mr Young on his own account, and he is authorised to collect all outstanding debts and discharge all outstanding liabilities of the Copartnership now Dissolved.
