James Miller was brother to George Miller (of George Miller & Co.) and John Miller (of John Miller & Co.); all involved in oil trade or manufacture.

Valuation rolls list the proprietors of James Miller, Son & Co. as proprietors of the Forth & Clyde Paraffin Works in Kirkintilloch in 1871 and 1872, although no evidence has been found that they manufactured oil there. James Miller, Son & Co, are listed in Glasgow Post Office directories from 1866 (or earlier) to 1869 as "merchants and drysalters" of 86, Mitchell St. Between 1870 and and 1873 they are listed as"general and oil merchants and drysalters" at 75 Union st. , and simply as "merchants" from 1874.

No link is thought to exist with James Miller; associated with James Steel's Broxburn Paraffin Works, or with James Miller, a partner in the Dalserf Coal, Coke, & Oil Co.; owners of the Swinehill Oil Works.

    • BY the death of the late James Miller, Merchant and Drysalter, residing in Glasgow, he and his representatives ceased, as at 30th June last, to have any interest in the Firm of MESSRS. JAMES MILLER, SON,& COMPANY, Merchants and Drysalters, Glasgow, London, and Leith. The Business has since been and will continue to be carried on by the Subscribers Robert Miller and Robert Orr, the surviving Partners, under the same Firm as formerly ; and they are authorized to receive payment of all debts due to the late Firm, and will also pay all claims against the same.
