Valuation rolls record "James Miller, Banker, Wishaw" as owner of the Broxburn Paraffin Works between 1867 and 1876; although the Glasgow Oil Co. were noted as occupiers from 1870 to 1871. James Miller was one of three partners of the Glasgow Oil Co. Ltd. (the others being Robert Bell and Walter McLellan). It is uncertain whether James Miller traded on his own account, or whether he was listed as representative of the limited company.
