Redwood includes; "Hutchinson's Oil Works, proprietor: Hutchinson, operational 1864-66" in his list of oil works associated with the coal or shale oil trade. This might refer to activities at Bishop Street Oil Manufactory, which valuation rolls indicate were operated c.1858 -61 by George Hutchison & Co., and c.1862-3 by Robert Hutchison & Co.

During 1861 and 1862 the firm of George Hutchison & Co. are listed in trade directories as "manufacturers of hyper-sperm oil"; thought to be an oil produced surreptitiously using Young's patent process, despite claims that it was "solely manufactured from animal matter". The firm of William Brown & Co. also manufactured "hyper-sperm oil."

In 1860, the firm of George Hutchison & Co. was dissolved, although the business continued under that name with Robert Hutchison as sole partner. This firm appears to have been declared bankrupt in 1862. The hyper-sperm oil business then seems to have been carried forward by the firm of J & R Hutchison & Co., a partnership of John Hutchison and Robert Hutchison, This business was dissolved early in 1863 and the business carried forward by the firm of George Hutchison & Co., of which Robert Hutchison was sole partner

In 1865, the firm of Hutchison & Son, of which Robert Hutchison was sole partner, was declared bankrupt.

Robert Hutchison & Co. were also proprietors of the Cowlairs Road Oil Works which valuation rolls indicate were operational between 1867 until a major fire in April 1871 that destroyed much of the works. These oil works appear to have been exclusively concerned with the processing of natural oils and greases.

There is no known association with the firm of Thomas Hutchison, proprietors of a paraffin refinery near Broxburn between 1864 and 1869.

DISASTEROUS FIRE-IN AN OIL MANUFACTORY AT COWLAI RS, - DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £10,000

Late last evening a most alarming and disastrous fire broke out in a still, lard, tallow, and sperm oil manufactory at Cowlairs, belonging to Mr Robert Hutchison, by which a great portion of the building was destroyed and an immense quantity of the stock stored in the premises were consumed. The works, which are situated in the northern district of Cowlairs, covering an area of fully an acre and a half. The building in which the fire originated consisted of four storeys, and measured 140 by 50 feet . This building was used for pressing and filtering purposes,.and was stored with a large quantity of lard, tallow, and oil. These premises were surrounded by other buildings, also containing large supplies of oil.

To the west of the house in which the fire occurred there is a two-storey building,a portion ofwhichisfittedupao an engine, fir house and a boiler house, anol the remainder as fel a pan-room or store, which also contained oil of and tallow,. and to which the fire ultimately extended. The fire was first observed shortly before ten o'clock,. and was at that time confined to the northern portion of the building. The alarm was immnediately raised, and the on people connected with the work, most of whom live in the immediate, neighbourhood, were communicated with, but though they arrived shortly afterwards, the flames, which, owing to the imflammable nature of the material contained in the premises, extended with. alarming rapidity, had reached well nigh to the centre of the building. Some delay , was caused in sending information of the occurrence to the fire station in Glasgow, as a consequence of the telegraph wire. which passed over the works being burned.
