Bain & Drummond

From 1858 (or earlier) John Bain was a partner in the firm of John and Robert Bain, coal and commission agents at the Old Basin, Port Dundas. Glasgow Post Office directories show that in 1864, the firm established a second depot at Maryhill and an office at 22 Dundas St. Robert Bain is listed as sole proprietor of this business from 1865.

In the 1865 Glasgow Post Office Directory, John Bain is first listed as proprietor of Over Possil Colliery, with an office in Fleming St. In the 1866 and 1867 editions he is listed as "Coal and Shale Master" operating from the same office. The 1868 and subsequent directories make no mention further mention of John Bain. Throughout the period of directory listings, his home address is shown as " Bellfield Cottage, off Possil Road."

It appears that John Bain entered partnership with Peter Drummond as oil manufacturers, presumably based at Over Possil adjacent to the Over Possil colliery. This partnership was dissolved in 1865.

Note: There is no known association between John Bain of Bellfield Cottage and John Bain of Morriston, partner in Bain and Carlile and other operators of the Rosebank Oil Works.
