Andrew Spencer was first listed as a coalmaster in the 1864 edition of the Glasgow post office directory. From 1869 he is listed as proprietor of Shawsburn and Auldton collieries, Larkhall and from 1872, also Ashgill colliery. The office address was given as 13, Dixon St. Glasgow, and the residence as Millburn House, by Carluke. This listing remained unchanged until 1881, when Andrew Spencer was described as proprietor of Shawsburn, Riggside and Douglas collieries. Presumably Auldton and Ashgill pits closed or were sold off at that time as, on 23rd February 1880, the Glasgow Herald advertised the sale of machinery at those locations. Andrew Spencer continued to be listed as a coalmaster into the 1890's.

Separate listings are included in post office directories between 1869 and 1872 for "Andrew Spencer, Shawsburn oil works, Larkhall, office; 13 Dixon St.". Valuation rolls list Shawsburn oil works as "not working" between 1871 and 1875.
