The firm of H. Meir, Esq, are listed in the 1865 Coal Commission report as operating 18 oil retorts in Tunstall. In the 1870 trade directory, H. Meir & Sons are listed as paraffin oil manufacturers in Tunstall. H. Meir is also listed as a coal and ironmaster, the proprietor of the Tunstall colliery.
Henry Meir was also Chairman of the North Staffordshire Oil Co. Ltd., an organisation established to refine the produce for local crude oil producers. Henry Meir J.P., of Greengates, Tunstall, died in 1874. John Meir & Sons were proprietors of the Greengate Pottery.
