The Scottish Oil Agency Ltd was formed under government direction during the first World War to combine the sales and marketing activities of the surviving Scottish shale oil companies. The following year, when these companies were amalgamated into Scottish Oils Ltd., the agreement with Scottish Oil Agency was amended, and Scottish Oil Agency Ltd. became responsible for marketing and distribution of both home produced and imported oils produced by Scottish Oils and associated companies in the Anglo-Persian group. The products of the shale oil industry were sold in England and Ireland by the British Petroleum Co.
The Scottish Oil Agency operated a network of distribution depots across Scotland, and maintained a number of local offices and regional sales staff. William Fraser was appointed the first Managing Director of the Agency, and did much to shape its operations.
The Scottish Oil Agency Ltd was wound-up in 1932, following the creation of Scottish Oils & Shell Mex Ltd, a Scottish arm of the marketing alliance between the Anglo-Persian and Shell oil companies. The Scottish Oil Agency Ltd continued as a dormant company until 1997.
