Description

B&W negative copied in 1990 from official albums then held at Grangemouth refinery.

The driver of these locomotives sat sideways and controlled the throttle by hand. The engine had three forward gears and one reverse which drove the wheels by sets of chains. These machines were hardy machines which required a strict maintenance schedule.

The exhaust emissions were restricted to a level determined by the mines inspectorate, and were carefully monitored and the results analysed by the central laboratory in Middleton Hall. In order to control the emissions, the exhaust was cooled over a water 'bath' and then led through a sawdust filter box (dampened with water) to extract as much carbon as possible before expelling into the mine air courses.
