Description

B&W negative copied in 1990 from official albums then held at Grangemouth refinery.

This view shows bricks being sealed into an autoclave. Bricks were formed in a hydraulic press, then stacked by hand onto small railway bodies. A number of these bogies would be pushed into an autoclave, the domed end would be swung into place and fixing bolts tightened. The bricks were then subjected to steam pressure for eight hours. Each autoclave could hold 11,000 bricks.
