Winchburgh electric railway: electric locomotive Oakbank No 1 outside the engine shed. Two locomotives were built by Baldwin of Philadelphia, USA. Each had two 25hp motors and operated via a trolley pole from an overhead 500V DC supply. This view shows "Oakbank Oil Co. No 1" (Baldwin 20586 of 1902) outside the locomotive shed. The unstable looking cut out of the door arch allows the overhead power line into the shed. Wheel sets and motor of a similar locomotive is seen to the left. Both No 1 & No 2 survived until the closure of the line in 1960.R10-00353: R10-00353-copy image
Candlemaking house in Broxburn This picture, apparently taken in the 1950's, shows candle making frames at Broxburn. Preheated wax was poured from the wax bucket, shown beside the frames, into a tray above the machine connecting to a series of tin/pewter moulds. Water is used to cool the moulds and then the solid candles are pushed out of the moulds by a piston. The moulds are then reheated and the next batch are cast. The continuous wick is cut after every second batch.R10-00354: R10-00354-copy image
